Wow, has it really been that long? Guilty as charged, the post dates don't lie.
I still hear the odd question as to why we changed our name from Campus Crusade for Christ, Canada to Power to Change. I did report about that while out in Manitoba and we also mentioned it in our newsletter but I thought it was appropriate to state the answer hear too.
When Leonard Buhler came to Langley to head up CCCC he met with the leadership of the then 14 different ministries an asked what they thought were some of the major issues facing CCCC. They told him the number one issue was our name.
What were the issues?
1) Although our ministry started as a campus ministry we have long been much more. CCCC had 15 ministries when we changed our name, so our name no longer accurately reflected who we are.
2) Crusade is a word that is marked with animosity is the muslim world, so to effectively reach them we wanted a name that would not close the door before we could start a conversation.
3)Unfortunately even our Lords name has keep us from effectively reaching places of higher learning on our own continent. (yes it's true)
4)I have had to an many occasions had to explain to people that we are not Youth for Christ. They are a totally different ministry and so I hope that this will bring an end to that mix up.
What possitive things have come up from our change? Well we believe that our name now begs a question, Power to Change what? We had a very encouraging incident at our training for new staff here in town. We had a sign out side the hotel we use for the week of training. A lady drove by the sign, read it, turned around, came in an asked what that meant because she said "I need to change my life." The staff leader then got to share the gospel with the lady.
That was reassurance to me we have the right name. Your comments are always welcome, we do have them monitored so we don't get trouble. God bless.
Till next time.
